Game of Thrones is the biggest thing on the planet right now. The marketing department at HBO are doing some stellar work. But we can also learn some things from the show itself. Today, I am going to talk about bending the knee before you know who you really are.
SPOILERS ARE COMING!
If you make decisions about your brand, marketing and positioning before you know what your business truly is, and what it’s capable of, you can put yourself in a bad position to grow – just ask Jon Snow.
In the first episode of season eight of Game of Thrones the erstwhile Jon Snow finds out he is actually the true heir to the Iron Throne.
Unfortunately for him, he’s found this out after pledging his allegiance to Daenerys Stormborn. This puts him in a situation that could have been easily avoided. If Jon had access to good research in time, looking at you Bran and Sam, then he could have made an informed decision.
The consequences for Jon are numerous, including falling in love with his aunt. The consequences of poor decisions, made on insufficient research, can also have lasting effects on your business – stunting your growth.
Underpin Marketing got its name because we like to build strategies. We also like to implement them in a way that avoids having to go back and start again in a few months’ time.
We also believe that marketing should always be yours. You should never give control over your marketing to someone else.
Instead, you should collaborate with someone who has taken the time to learn about your business and believes in it. It might be us, it might not. Our code of conduct clearly sets out this mission. And if we don’t believe we can help, we will help you find someone who can.
